The GOP Makes History and Chooses their First African American Chairman. But will this alone change their Party?

I commend the Republican Party for making a change and selecting their first African American Chairman. I have always believed that there should be blacks in both parties. However, I believe that the election of Michael Steele is not going to change the Republican Party. The main problem is that they [the party] is too regionalized. Most if not all their constituents are strong in the South. Secondly, the grassroots of the party did not select Michael Steele, it was 168 GOP leaders. Mr. Steele also has made it clear that he believes strongly in the same principles that the GOP has carried out for the last eight years.

Electing an African American is a start but if the Republican Party wants to be the party of reform, they must support the middle class. This is something that they have continuously failed to do. What do you think? Leave a comment on blog.

The only reason behind selecting Michael Steele is that the Republican Party now realizes the importance of the Black vote!

If I was Michael Steele, I wouldn't have accepted that position. It's a slap in the face.

So to answer your question...No this will not change the Republican party. They need to change their mindset. They need to change their way of thinking.

THEY NEED TO PUT THEIR MINDS ON THE POOR AND MIDDLE CLASS. UNTIL THEN, THEY WILL NEVER CHANGE!

FYI: Douglas your column is great!

Thanks for your comments! I believe that this truly does show that African Americans and other minorities are truly very important to the electric.

It's clear Mr. Steele won't change the party, but I do commend the party for selecting him. I can only hope he reaches his point of self-realization while he is chair.

Although I don't agree politically with Republicans, they do need more people of color. Hopefully we'll start seeing more candidates and more people of color at the RNC. Besides, that's the true test of our battles...can people of color cross all barriers...even in the Republican Party.
