Do you Trust the United Way?

In today's Charlotte Observer there is a report on how the CEO of United Way of The Carolinas adjusted her retirement pension and pay to meet her personal needs. This is just flat out shameful. With millions of people loosing their houses and jobs, we still have CEO's whom feel that they must get millions and will break the law to do it. The power is in the people, and we must stop it.

Don't get me started. As a professional fundraiser, the UW has always really bothered me. The original idea was that UW would be the fundraising arm of many organizations but they long ago stopped that in favor of raising a smaller percentage of money for more organizations but not enough to fund 100%. That means that the organization still has to raise money. Why do they still take UW money, you ask. Well, UW organizations have more gravitas within the community just because they take UW money. But UW money puts a strangle hold on when and how you can raise money. To many NPOs, it isn't worth it. I long ago quit giving money to UW and give directly to NPOs. I encourage you to do the same. I won't even mention the million-dollar salary of the ED in Charlotte. UW is a way for "leaders" in the community can pat themselves on their backs as they force their workforce to cough up their hard-earned money so that their bosses can feel good about themselves and give LARGE salaries to the staff. Perhaps I'm jealous but that's not why I got involved with NPOs. I did it to help others, not myself. Although, if there's an opening in Charlotte, let's talk. I'll work for HALF that salary.

The UW is simply a reflection of today's society. They are no different than the greed and self serving attitudes demonstrated by Wall St, corporate America, Church leaders and the like. They do however use part of their resources to help people in our society that need help the most. The dilema for us as contributors is to decide whether the good outweight the bad and in my mind it does. The Charlotte incident is hopefully the exception and not the rule where as with big business and many nonprofits it is the opposite. Bottom line many people need help today. U have to decide how and if U will use the United Way to help them. I decided to continue to use them.
