SC State House Rep Carl Gullick's (R) Departure creates Good Will

SC State House Representative Carl Gullick (R) of York County, stated that he will be leaving his post. His wife is a physician and is currently working at a hospital in KY and wants to move to there to be with her. Gullick is known as a progressive Republican and is respected by others. His departure has shown the level of good will both parties have for him. This, however, will open up a possible run for a viable democrat from the Fort Mill Area. Whomever the democrats decide to run, the candidate will have to be a middle of the road blue dog democrat. Fort Mill is a heavy Republican strong hold. The election for this seat will be interesting.

Racial Jokes towards President Obama are Getting Out of Hand.

Three months ago, this country of ours witnessed the most historical event since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Emancipation Proclamation. Barack Obama was elected President of the United States. However, some are not happy about this at all. Since his election and inauguration, there have been a lot of racial slurs and jokes. White Supremacists Groups posted comments on their websites and blogs like “Kill this N”. Nooses have been hung in schools in some states. I have spoken to many young people in high school and they have told me stories of white students telling them that Obama will be shot and that he is a N.

Recently, the NY Post printed a cartoon that shows two cops killing a monkey. Many civil rights groups slammed the paper stating that this was directed towards the President. A CA Mayor recently stepped down after he sent an e-mail that shows watermelons on the lawn of the White House. In the e-mail, the former mayor cites “No Easter Egg Hunt This Year.” Fox News Commentator Sean Hannity recently created a poll on his web site asking questions related to starting a revolution and union succession. Just recently some members of a police department in New York were suspended after sending an e-mail out stating that “KFC will be set up in the front of the White House”

These actions have greatly concerned me as an American and a black man. I believe that we as a people must take action to stop this type of hate. We must find a way to unite and attack racism directly. CNN has done a fantastic job with Black in America 1 and 2. It really displayed how Blacks see ourselves and the struggles we face. I am a supporter of a discussion and dialogue that should be called “The New America, An Open Discussion about Race” Whites, blacks everyone should be brought to the table and have an open dialogue about racial unity. If we do not take some type of action, everything that our forefathers fought for will vanish along with the American Spirit.

OBAMA: "We Will Recover and We will Rebuild"

During his first address before a joint session of Congress, President Barack Obama stated that the "Day of Reckoning has Arrived" The President laid out a bold agenda for the country which included a cure for cancer, energy efficiency and affordable health care. President Barack Obama also stated that “we will rebuild, we will recover and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.” The President was embraced by many well wishers and applause's. GOP Governor Bobby Jindal of LA will be giving the GOP response after the President speaks.

Alan Keys does not acknowledge Barack Obama as President

According to the Ticket Blog with the Los Angeles Times, Alan Keys has stirred back up the debate about the authenticity of the President’s Birth Certificate. The blog states that Keys “calls Obama a communist and usurper and says he refuses to acknowledge the validity of Obama's inauguration over lingering questions in the minds of many conspiracists about the 44th president's birthplace. The President was born in Hawaii which is a state. This is not the first time the President’s citizenship has been brought into question. After Obama was elected, many conservatives began a campaign to try to prove that the President was not an American Citizen.

The constitution clearly states that a person running for President must be an American Citizen. If the President was not an American Citizen, he would not have been able to run for President, let alone serve in the U.S. Senate. The courts have proved as well as the State of Hawaii that the President is an American Citizen

NY Post Cartoon Shows that Racism is Not Dead

The NY Post sketched a cartoon that showed two white police officers killing a crazed monkey. After they killed the monkey, they both said to each other “They will have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill ” This was a direct attack on the President of the United States. I am furious that a paper like the NY Post which has been around for a long time would stoop to such low and dark actions. I believe strongly that Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Patterson should take action on this matter. We as community leaders should join local organizations like the NAACP, our churches and others to come up with a mobilization plan to make sure that this will not happen again. We must realize that the election of President Obama has displayed great progress but it may also resurrect ghost from the past that we must defeat with all our might and our liberty.

Will the Corridor of Shame Remain the Corridor of Shame?

Governor Mark Sanford R-SC has stated that he wants to review the stimulus money before accepting it. According to the State Paper, “Sanford, a Republican, had been noncommittal on whether he would accept the $8 billion in benefits for S.C. that includes money for more unemployment benefits, health care, public schools and tax breaks.” House Majority Whip Congressman Clyburn wrote an amendment in the package allowing state lawmakers to bypass a governor who refuses stimulus money. Many supporters of the President’s Stimulus Package are pushing for some of the money to be allocated to schools in the Corridor of Shame. The Governor’s non-commitment on the stimulus package money has angered many including the House Majority Whip. I believe that the Governor should accept this money. The Corridor Shame has made South Carolina the laughing stock of the country. South Carolina must stand up and help bring this part of the state from the 1850’s to 2009.
