Census 2010: Many African Americans are Not Aware of its Importance

With the deadline for the Census approaching, many African Americans are reluctant to answer their doors and fill out the census questionnaires. Community Leaders and Churches must take the lead to educate the African American Community about the importance of the Census. The census can determine how much money a community receives for schools, roads, bridges, etc. It also plays a major part in the redistricting of congressional districts. This is especially important when it comes to Section 5 of the 1965 Voters Rights Act which restructures districts for Blacks to get elected to political office. We must make sure that minority communities do not continue to have a baleful attitude towards the Census, it is a matter of life and death.

Congressional Democrats could become a Victim of the Party in Power Curse.

With rage over the AIG Bonuses and a partisan fight over the budget looming, the Democrats on Capitol Hill could be in danger of facing the same thing the GOP faced, “the party in power curse”. When you are the party in power in Washington, you get to call all the shots but you get blamed for everything. With reports of Senator Chris Dodd and President Barack Obama both receiving over $100,000 worth of campaign contributions from AIG, many on right and in the media are trying to find out how long the administration new about the AIG bonuses and how long the President knew of them. The President effectively explained today that these bonuses were written in a contract with AIG before he came into office. I believe that in order for Congressional Democrats to avoid the curse of the party in power, they must continue to fight the GOP with facts and continue to stay on message. They must avoid the same hubris that the GOP had or else they will loose house seats in 2010.

Former Vice President tells CNN that America is Less Safe under Obama's Policies.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney told CNN's John King on State of the Union this past Sunday that America is less safe under President Obama's Policies. Conservative talk show host Glen Beck on Sunday stated that America is heading towards socialism and totalitarianism. Now I understand that the opposition party's job is to oppose the party in power. However, when you oppose the party in power, you must have solutions. When the democrats were in the minority for eight years, they opposed the GOP but they also came up with solutions to assist. When they [Democrats] opposed President Bush and the GOP, they were called unpatriotic. Albeit the Democrats left then President Bush a surplus, Republicans didn't want to listen to them when they were in power. Now that the Democrats are in power, the question that is being asked in Washington is "Should the Democrats really listen to the GOP after blowing a surplus and contributing to the worst recession in American History? Americans are very tired of the rhetoric coming out of Washington. All we ask is that both parties put politics aside and work together to help us rise from this crisis.

Rhianna and Chris Brown has brought Domestic Violence to light for a lot of Teens

Since R& B singer Chris Brown was charged with beating Rhianna, a lot of teenagers have had deep discussions about domestic violence. Some young girls have spoken about being in abusive relationships while others have had friends whom have been abused. Oprah on Thursday, dedicated her show to the Rhianna and Chris Brown Case. The show also highlighted the recent story in Charlotte, NC where a teenage cheerleader was killed by her abusive boyfriend. Oprah interviewed the young woman's friends and discussed how they felt about domestic violence. In some ways there is a positive to the Chris Brown and Rhianna tragedy. It has shown young men that it is not right to hit women. Unfortunately, with Rhianna going back to Chris; it will have people to believe that she is weak and does not respect herself. A lot of people have said that she is wrong for going back. However statistics show that 80% of abused women return to their abusers. So this is not uncommon for a woman like Rhianna to do this. Albeit these statistics are true, I believe that Chris Brown needs to participate in anger management/counseling. Rhianna needs to take sometime to herself alone and hopefully leave Chris Brown alone for good.

SC State House Rep Carl Gullick's (R) Departure creates Good Will

SC State House Representative Carl Gullick (R) of York County, stated that he will be leaving his post. His wife is a physician and is currently working at a hospital in KY and wants to move to there to be with her. Gullick is known as a progressive Republican and is respected by others. His departure has shown the level of good will both parties have for him. This, however, will open up a possible run for a viable democrat from the Fort Mill Area. Whomever the democrats decide to run, the candidate will have to be a middle of the road blue dog democrat. Fort Mill is a heavy Republican strong hold. The election for this seat will be interesting.
